The “Ozempic Face”

As a Somatologist, my work is rooted in the integration of the human body and the skin. I don't just look at the surface, I look at how your internal chemistry is reflected on your canvas.

The “Ozempic Face”/ loss of structural integrity in the skin: The face contains strategic "fat pads" that act as the scaffolding for your skin and give it youthful volume. GLP-1s facilitate rapid weight loss, and often, the face is the first place we lose volume. When these fat pads shrink quickly, the skin (which may have already lost some elasticity) doesn't have time to "shrink-wrap" to the new, smaller frame, leading to a hollowed or gaunt look. 


Ageing more rapidly: Rapid weight loss may lower the levels of collagen and elastin, which are necessary for keeping skin tight. GLP-1 medications may potentially interfere with the production of these proteins through hormonal changes or nutritional gaps. This can lead to thinner, more fragile skin. Significant weight loss on GLP-1 medications can also include a loss of muscle mass, further reducing the firmness beneath the skin.


Loss of glow: GLP-1s work by slowing down gastric emptying and suppressing appetite. This can lead to a deficit in key "skin-loving" nutrients like healthy fats, high-quality proteins, and essential vitamins, which you need to give you that “glow”.

The hidden inflammatory response: While these drugs are marketed to reduce systemic inflammation, for some, the rapid shift can trigger new sensitivities, rashes, or even flare-ups of existing conditions like acne as the body struggles to recalibrate its hormonal and immune balance.

My take on GLPs

I feel there is something disempowering about the ritual of injecting yourself to manage a biological process that our bodies are designed to navigate through intuition and nourishment. By outsourcing our metabolic wisdom to a synthetic needle, we risk losing the sacred connection between our minds and our hunger, our emotions and our fuel.


We must also address the reality of dependency. For many, these medications become the most addictive "habit" they have ever encountered, not because of a "high," but because stopping the drug often leads to a rapid rebound. The clinical reality is that many are told they must stay on these injections for life to maintain the results. This creates the very opposite of the freedom and vitality we strive for in holistic health.

How can I support you if you are going through this weight loss journey?

As a somatologist, my approach is never "one size fits all." One of my specialties is MLD. When you lose weight rapidly, your body is processing a lot of metabolic waste. MLD helps to clear puffiness and "sluggish" skin. It also supports the body’s natural detoxification and improves the overall tone and health of the skin tissue.

In the clinic, I shift the focus on collagen induction, bringing back healthy, glowing skin, preventing or dealing with acne and flare-ups and repairing the skin barrier. I use an amalgamation of medical-grade cosmeceuticals and natural, ethically produced oils, skin needling and facial massage. These modalities help thicken the dermis to combat thinning, intensely hydrate the surface layers to smooth fine lines and stimulate the skin’s natural "snap-back" ability.

Target your skincare routine

To boost collagen, use products containing retinoids, vitamin C or peptides to encourage the production of structural proteins. To strengthen the skin barrier, look for ceramides, squalane, hyaluronic acid and glycerin to lock in moisture and combat dryness. Protect your skin daily by wearing a broad-spectrum Nimue SPF 40  to prevent UV rays from further breaking down your collagen reserves.
